What is Insurance Fraud?

Insurance fraud is a crime. And far from being a victimless crime, insurance fraud victimizes every resident of New York State, costing consumers millions of dollars in the form of increased premiums and higher prices for goods and services. The exact cost of insurance fraud is difficult to estimate because much of it goes unreported.

Insurance Fraud takes many forms.

How To Report Suspected Insurance Fraud

Insurance fraud happens every day. And every time it happens, it means money out of your pocket. You can help in the fight against this serious crime. If you suspect that insurance fraud has been committed, you can report it by mail or fax to the DFS Financial Frauds Consumer Protection Division by following the instructions below. You can also contact us on the toll-free hotline at 1-888-372-8369. A frauds investigator will contact you for details and the matter will be kept confidential.

Please do not confuse the crime of insurance fraud with a dispute you may have with your insurance company that should properly be reported to the Department’s Consumer Services unit. For example, delays in payment, monetary disputes, cancellations and nonrenewals are issues that our Consumer Assistance Unit can help you with. If you have such a complaint that you cannot resolve with your insurer, please visit our Consumer Information site by selecting this link. You will receive instructions for filing a complaint or making an inquiry.
